The Man Behind the Microphone
My story is a strange one. It may seem hard to believe that someone who
was born and raised in San Francisco, educated (if you want to call it
that) at U.C. Berkeley, and the child of Latin American immigrants could
end up so far to the right of center on so many issues. I think all the
craziness and stupidity that I encountered on a daily basis just served
to reinforce my conservative ideals.
But before I became political, I
forged my credentials as a bonafide big mouth. Practically since
birth.
When I was less than five years old, I began playing with my maternal
grandfather's great big portable cassette recorder. I'd take the
microphone and record monologues, skits, and read from my favorite comic
books, complete with character voices and sound effects. Yes, I was nuts
at a very young age and everyone in the family knew it. I was different.
I expressed myself through the spoken word and spent hours pondering the
universe while the other kids played ball in the street. A reserved
young man, I guess you could call me. Except when put in front of a live
microphone. Then all bets are off. You never know what I'll throw your
way.
My goal is to entertain and inform at the same time. Whether the
subjects at hand are hysterically funny or heart breaking, I try to deal
with them in ways no one else will. And it's always with a brutally
honest voice and perspective. Not for the "reality
challenged", as I like to call those who absolutely refuse to live
in the real world.
The News According to Hughes has been heard
on top stations in San Francisco, Boston, and Sacramento. It's
latest incarnation, Fox Across America with Spencer
Hughes is heard around the country and around the world on satellite
radio and the internet. The show originates from the West Coast via the
Fox News world headquarters in downtown Manhattan. We have heard
from listeners in big cities and small towns. Truck
drivers in Nebraska. Grandmothers in Florida. Hippies in San Francisco.
Yuppies in New York. Citizens of France, Belgium, the Philippines,
Sweden, Spain, Denmark and beyond. People from all walks of life and all
over the world are drawn into the conversation.
We
won't always agree on things, but everyone walks away with something on
my show. In a sea of mediocrity, there's
just nothing else like it on the radio. Period.
On a personal note, I'm a kid at heart, which comes in handy since
I have 6 wonderful kids. And no, I haven't been THAT busy. They are
hers, mine, and ours. My very own Brady Bunch, minus Alice. Never a dull
moment. I like to read, write, and travel. I enjoy magic, video games, and seeing the look in my children's
eyes when they discover something wonderful and new. I like
things that make me laugh and cry. I like music ranging from Frank
Sinatra to Pink Floyd. I'm one of the only guys in America that
prefers a romance novel to a football game, scented soaps to Old
Spice. I love God and
country, and the few friends I'm lucky enough to have.
And I love talking, obviously.
But it's not to hear my own voice. It's to hear your voices, ideas, and opinions on what makes this crazy little world go round. It's only
talk radio, but it's also the free market place of ideas. A place where
we'll laugh, cry, and learn something we didn't know before.
Thank God there's not a height requirement for
radio.
Isn't it time for a change? Take a cruise with Hughes down the road of
common sense...an extraordinary show hosted by an ordinary guy. It's FOX
ACROSS AMERICA.
